School start time tires students

You wake up at 6 in the morning, get dressed, eat, brush your teeth, and leave for school, all while still half asleep. You then go to school for 7 hours and afterwards you have any extra curricular activities that you would like to do and some people even have to work. We all have social lives yet we are piled on with the work our school, work, and home give us. No wonder kids don’t go to sleep until 12 o’clock at night.

Scientists have concluded that teenagers brains don’t even start until 10 o’clock in the morning. So why do we start so early in the morning when our brains aren’t even working? The first 3 or 4 classes that we have in the morning are not able to be retained in our brains. There is no point in going to school for those first few classes when we will never be able to learn what was given to us during that time.

Some people say it’s easier to start off the day early, but I believe school should not start until later. This way we have time to let our brains rest after the long and crazy day we had previously. Parents can go to work earlier and get the younger children on their bus without worry. Us teenagers can also do last minute homework in the morning if we are too tired at night to do it then. Allowing teenagers to sleep in is not only healthier but also makes them much happier people.

One of the main problems this year in our school is students coming in late. Mostly students are too tired because of their busy night last night so they sleep in or they are out getting their morning coffees so they can try to stay awake during the school day. Our school now has a rule that we can not have our morning coffees unless your teacher allows it. However, if the school starts later in the day, kids won’t be late. We will have time to sleep in and become fully resting. And if we are resting, we won’t need our morning coffee to keep us awake during the day. Even if students still wanted their morning coffee or any other type of drink, they would have time in the morning to get it.

Now, I understand that some people have sports or work or other activities that they want to fit throughout their day. I also understand that people want to be able to have free time after school to just relax and take a breather from all the stress. But having extra time to sleep in the morning will help boost your brainpower and energy throughout the day. You will be able to accomplish more with all the extra energy that you have gained that night from sleep.

Throughout our busy schedules, we barely have time to relax. However, moving the start time of school allows us to be refreshed and ready to learn. It will not only benefit the students who go to school but also the teachers who also have very busy lives and children of their own. Overall, would you rather have a lot of rest and learn more or wake up tired every morning and fall asleep during class because of the crazy and frantic life you have? I know what one I would choose. Now it’s up to you.
