Ethan Jewell, a 21 year old mental health poet/singer impacts the lives of many by carving into the hearts, body and minds to “feel your feelings” even when life feels black. He has multiple songs zooming in on depression and the journey of healing. This review will be focused on one of his songs, “Something to Live For.”
From Ethan’s album Loneliness in the Pressure of Company features the song “Something to Live For”. Does his song help find purpose and objectives when life feels meaningless? I strongly think so, his words hit close to the mind and heart leaving hope for the future.
This song starts off with a voice message to someone Ethan hasn’t spoken to in a while, when it stops that’s when the poetic song starts. It instantly starts with words that almost everyone can relate to at some point in their life. This sets the theme of how many struggle with mental health. He then starts going into little moments in life that bring beauty, like sunrises and how a little bit of color is what can bring beams of beauty.
His lyrics talk about how hearts can be repaired even when they feel broken. He shares the little moments in life that bring little joys that are just enough to keep living. Many of his lyrics relate to me and the feelings I have. When the lyrics pick up and he talks about the times many people go through hits me hard. He says, “The first hug after seeing someone you missed”. This line really brings out the emotions for me because it reminds me of a time just like Ethan portrays, going through the hard times is worth it for the good. This song shows how grateful we should be for life and every hour matters because the moments we have that are taken for granted could save someone else’s.
As the lyrics slow down again he goes into the part of healing after the journey he takes you on through the song. He brings many emotions to me and I believe this song is even a simple joy that gives me something to live for. At the end it goes back to the voicemail and it makes us listeners feel like the whole time the voice message was for us. Once I heard this song I’m intrigued to listen to more of the album of Loneliness in the Pressure of Company. Ethan Jewell could take you on the journey of feeling your feelings again.
