Tigers Varsity Wrestling started their season off by winning against Northampton 36-22 but losing to Smith Vocational 33-42 and West Springfield 22-46. Tigers travelled to Smith Vocational on Saturday, December 12th, to compete at their first wrestling quad meet of the season.

At their match against Smith Vocational, the Tigers won all their matches but lost by points. Gino Viamari, Jack Greeney, and Cyrus Larivee won by minor decision. Andrei Danilchenko won by fall and Isaiah Cardenales, Nathan Zayas and Jeremy Rodriguez took forfeits.

At their second match against Northampton, Cardenales, Viamari, and Greeney won by fall. Sean O’Grady, Larivee, and Zayas took a forfeit.

At their final match, Ethan Fleming and Zayas won by fall. Cardenales won by major decision and Viamari and O’Grady won by minor decisions.

As a team, Cardenales was said to believe that they had a rough start but by the end they finished strong. “We really need to work on neck bridges this year and fighting off our back” Cardenales said. The team’s main goal this year is to win league. However, each wrestler has their own personal goal. Both Viamari and Cardenales want to win Western Mass and Cardenales believes he can go even farther this year and win states. “The best part about being a wrestler is brotherhood. They are just a good group of guys who get together and fight each other” Viamari said. The wrestling team is made up of only 14 athletes, but they believe that they have the skill to win Western Mass.
