Stop Celebrating Christmas Before Thanksgiving

Alex Burns, Staff Editor

Let’s take a trip back to the month of November, when leaves are slowly starting to fall off trees and the spooky season also known as the month of October has come to an end. Everyone is excited for the upcoming holiday seasons. But, there is one holiday that everyone seems to just overlook.

That holiday is Thanksgiving. As soon as Halloween comes to an end I feel like everyone is all of a sudden putting up Christmas trees, stockings, buying presents, decking the halls with boughs of holly, and just getting in the Christmas spirit. Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas as much as Cindy Lou who was no more than two but I do not think that we should jump the gun and just go straight into Christmas like Thanksgiving doesn’t exist. The Christmas season starts to takes place the 27th of November; Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, the day where everyone fresh off their Thanksgiving meals get into the Christmas spirit with eggnog in hand and bumrush stores acting like they have no sense to go get deals on gifts for their friends and family for Christmas. That’s when Christmas begins. Not right after Halloween. I do not want to go from being scared to then go straight into being happy and full of joy and cheer. I am not Jack Skellington and this is not “ A Nightmare Before Christmas!”  . I want to have that downtime to chill and look forward to spending time with loved ones and family without consumerism coming into play! I want to look forward to eating a nice scrumptious meal without christmas songs playing in the background! I want to go through my November without someone asking me “are you excited for christmas?” “YES I AM EXCITED FOR CHRISTMAS, BUT LET ME ENJOY MY THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY!”

Stop skipping over Thanksgiving like it does not exist. Celebrate these holidays in their designated holiday timeslots. No overlap! We do not overlap February and March holiday time slots because Valentine’s day isn’t as great as St. Patrick’s Day. We take it month by month and celebrate the holidays in their designated time slot. We are not heathens or hooligans, we need to follow the order, and the proper order is Thanksgiving before Christmas and that is final. Take the time to enjoy the fall weather while you still have it and look forward to spending time with your family and appreciate the food that will be presented in front of you. Then when it is time for the Christmas season to begin you can yell “Merry Christmas Ya Filthy Animals!” all you want. Just not before or during Thanksgiving.
