Spirit week: Thanksgiving festivities rally school pride

Get in the spirit: Students from every grade and circle came together during the three day week before Thanksgiving break to flaunt their tiger pride with crazy outfits, music, loud voices and plenty of school spirit.

The week before Thanksgiving vacation is always an exciting one when students are anticipating a much needed break, in the form of the the annual Thanksgiving football game, lots and lots of food, and time with family and friends. Students enjoyed a relatively easy 3 day week, centered around school spirit. Monday was “America Day” and students were all decked out with patriotic pride. Tuesday was “Mismatched Day”, a personal favorite of librarian Rebecca Mazur. She said she thought Cole Pettingill’s outfit, made up of two different shirts and two different pairs of pants that he folded into each other, “was very cool.” The half day on Wednesday was “Color Wars” day where each grade sported a different color. Mazur said that this day was her least favorite day because she felt it was a little boring and wanted to see something different.

As always, student council was the mastermind behind spirit week. Representatives from student council were at lunch everyday the week prior. All students were able to sign up to participate in events such as the popular gym game castle wars, a three legged race, an obstacle course, a basketball shoot-out, and a tug of war.

The freshmen earned the most points and won spirit week as a whole, and many students agreed that they underestimated the power and spirit of the freshmen.

The senior class was victorious in the tug of war against a team of faculty members and the basketball shoot-out was won by freshman Sophie Gatzounas.

Sophomore Taylor Cottingham said that her favorite part of the spirit week was the pep rally, and her least favorite part was the fact that it was only a three day week. She thinks a great idea for next year would be a pajama day theme.

Senior Sabrina Whalen said that her favorite part was that, “Everyone got together and showed off their creativity.” She has some great theme ideas for next year, like pirate day, 70s day, and a day devoted to Shakespearean time.

However, some students grew anxious as the 3 hour pep-rally went on. It was expressed that some of the tournaments of games such as castle wars took a long time, and those who weren’t participating and were merely watching became a little bored as the games went on.

Sophomore Joe Advey said he enjoyed spirit week a lot, but said that he really hopes next year we can have a full 5 day school week with different themes for each day.

Mazur also noted that it would be fun to have a non-athletic spirit day next year that could consist of poetry or a college speaker. She said, “It would be a day where we could all learn but not about the regular school subjects.”
