LET THE GAMES BEGIN: The American team parades out on the field.

Every four years, a sporting competition is held between all the nations of the world, known as the Olympic Games. This year’s winter games were held in Sochi, located in Krasnodar Krai, Russia. Sochi was the target of controversy about the Olympic Committee’s decisions to host the Olympics there. With the realization that the event itself is a largely publicized competition, there were concerns about possible attacks and dangers for all involved. When asked about the safety concerns and decision making of the Olympic committee, Dean of Students Matthew Benoit said, “There’s a lot that goes into choosing sites for Olympics, its not random like everyone thinks”. On the other side, there is a competitive spirit between all the nations who are participating. According to P.E. Teacher Eric Castonguay, he prefers the Summer Olympics, and “I think that it is a positive place to show their flows in other countries. For example, I would have pillows in hotels. I think that USA is going to get many gold medals this year. Japan is going to get one Bronze, and I hope that the USA mens hockey is going to beat Canada”. Former Olympic favorite Shaun White had a horrid run with Slopestyle and Halfpipe. After nailing his Switch Back 1080 during the Slopestyle, a hard crash caused him to fall face first, sending his legs towards his head while sliding down the course. He ranked 4th place in the Halfpipe finals with a score of 90.25, in comparison to his performance at qualifications, where he ranked 1st place with a score of 95.75. America received 3 gold medals and 2 bronze, winning a total of 5 over all metals. It has also been decided that the next winter Olympic games will be held in South Korea in 2018.
