Student teachers take control

A student teacher from Mount Holyoke

Student teachers come to the high school from nearby colleges to have real teaching experience before starting their careers.

Student teaching is a great way for college students to gain experience for their future work. It is important for students to be exposed to an actual classroom of students they might be teaching one day.

However, the amount of control that student teachers have over the classroom should be monitored. Teachers should always be in the room when a student teacher is teaching and to give them advice about their techniques.

Student teachers certainly should not be in control of students’ grades. They are after all not very experienced and a professional should actually be in control of final decisions.

Students are getting penalized because an unqualified person is grading their work. Teachers should be keeping an eye on their student teachers and not allow this to happen.

The amount of time student teachers are in charge of a classroom should also be controlled. Student teachers should not teach more than a couple of weeks at a time. If students are used to one teacher and then all of the sudden they have a different one until the end of the year, it will mess everybody up.

A possible solution for this issue is for student teachers to be monitored throughout their classes. Teachers should always be present to give feedback and help improve teaching techniques. This will help mold better teachers for the future.
