Seminar gives students new skills
This year, the school has started a Ninth Grade Seminar to help the freshmen with their study habits and strategies.
The purpose of this course is to teach freshmen skills that they are going to need for their future education. They learn how to read for information, how to summarize what they have read effectively, time management, and some study skills. These are all skills that are being used in other classes. “I think the classes are going well, I’ve heard from students that they are learning skills that other teachers are asking them to practice.” said English Teacher Kristin Hamilton
Reading for information is the skill of taking needed information out of a text, and using that information to the readers advantage. More skills the students are learning include learning how to abbreviate things while taking notes, and some ways to easily remember long phrases and names.
The two people that are teaching these classes are English Chair David Pelczarski and English teacher Kristen Hamilton “I think the classes are going well, I’ve heard from students that they are learning skills that other teachers are asking them to practice.” said Hamilton.
Some people said the classes are going well, and that they think the class is a good thing. “This class teaches good study habits that will help keep you in good routines.” said freshman Josh Rideout.
The seminar classes are a half year course. The classes are set up so that the first half hour of the class is used for the lesson plan the teacher has for that day, and the second half is used to complete work for other classes.
